The Maariv newspaper ran a story about Octane 96 car gasoline a number of months ago that has led to a storm and new legislation.
Maariv exposed that there is no necessity for Octane 96 gasoline, and all cars can run perfectly on Octane 95. The prices of Ocatne 95 are closely regulated, since this is seen as the basic gas required for cars, while the Octane 96 has not been regulated. This has led to very significant prices discrepancies, with gas companies making huge and unfair mark-ups on this gas.
Recently the Knesset passed a law that Octane 96 will no longer be sold in Israel, effective three months from now. However, Maariv exposed that almost all the gas stations continue to sell Octane 96 at very high markups. (The law has given a period of three months for the gas companies to finish their reserves, but the companies are using the period to make as much profit as they can off the unregulated gas.)
